HP Mini notebook has been a success among business class gadgets and today we have decided to review one of our favorites: the HP Mini 2140. This small notebook (which is actually a netbook because that is the main reason it was designed for: surfing the internet) has a very solid chassis, made from aluminum and magnesium, the link of materials used nowadays to produce durable laptops.


This 10.1 HP has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor with 1 GB of RAM. We really like the design of the notebook even it to some it may seem pretty dull; we think it's very elegant and business-looking like and it does not have that glossy lid that most small notebooks do, the one that make the computer look like it's made from cheap plastic. You have two solid hinges that are made of metal alloy just to make sure the display stays in place. One of the things that surprised us was the fact that this HP Mini notebook only has 2 USB ports instead of 3. Maybe it's because that ExpressCard slot takes up a lot of space. Compared to the previous HP mini model, the 2140 does not have any heating problems. That may be due to the Intel Atom processor which is not that powerful. We would give the keyboard an A+. HP really took advantage of all the free space it could find and the keyboard was stretched right to the edges of the notebook. The silver keys look like Scrabble pieces because they were all so flat. That is not a problem; you can type on these just as well as you can type on concave keys.

Unfortunately, we have found the same problem with this touchpad as with some other touchpads of Acer Aspire One models. The left and right mouse buttons are placed on both sides of the touchpad instead of underneath it. On the right side you can notice a small and faded line which is actually the scroll function; very useful for reading documents or web pages. The display is ok if you consider the size of the notebook (a bit too glossy for my taste). If you are not used to working with such small notebooks, you will easily become frustrated at first with the fact that the size of the screen allows you to read fewer text lines at once so you just have to keep on scrolling. You can choose between the 3-cell and the 6-cell battery. If you push the limits and use this small notebook at full display brightness and surfing the internet with wireless turned on, then you will get about 2 hours and 10 minutes of battery life. In our opinion, this is pretty nasty, since there is a lot of competition out there who can give you better features (at least as far as battery life is concerned). If you turn of the wireless features and use the notebook just to read/write a document then you will probably get around 3 hours of battery life.



As you can imagine, this HP Mini notebook also comes with a lot of preinstalled software. We have found the McAfee antivirus and the Microsoft Office trial versions to be pretty useful (at least until you can purchase the full versions). We also liked the Desktop Zoom feature because it's easier and faster to enlarge your desktop without having to change the resolution. Since you also have a webcam, HP has installed some useful software that will help you take photos or record audio and video tracks. As far as performance goes, this notebook runs quite well taking into consideration that it does not exactly have the latest technology inside. The Intel Atom processor is a good choice for a notebook the size of the Mini 2140 because you will mostly use it for your basic computer tasks and this was never designed to be your main computer. The HP Mini 2140 should have no trouble in letting you browse some internet pages, write an e-mail and edit a text document at the same time. Even if it's not exactly fast, it's an ideal choice for travelers that need to stay in touch wherever they are (common businessman feature). The speakers are ok and they produce decent sound. You could listen to some music if you are alone in a small room and really enjoy it but we still suggest you buy a good set of headphones or external speakers.



The graphics card is an Intel GMA 950 and watching some videos or playing Monopoly is pretty much everything you can do with it. The number of ports and connections should satisfy you like it satisfied us because 2 USB ports, an Express Card and SD card slot, VGA out, Ethernet port plus headphones and microphone jack are enough. Also 160 GB of free disk space should be enough for you to store all you files and folders even if you are away from your main computer for a very long time. Along with the 0.3 mega pixel webcam you also get an integrated microphone which should come in handy when you want to have a conference call or just video chat with your friends or family when you are travelling.

You can get everything we told you about above for a price of $450 dollars. Of course, there are cheaper options with similar specs but we didn't like the toy-look on them. The HP Mini 2140 has a business allure we really admire and we recommend it for those who want to show everyone they are not fooling around. We think it's a reasonable price if you consider other such notebooks like the Sony VAIO Lifestyle PC which is addressed to the same market segment. For you money, you will get some benefits that you may not find on other notebooks, like the spill resistant keyboard and the solid and durable chassis. You can also buy the 6-cell battery which HP claims will keep your notebook running about 8 hours

We could not believe our eyes when we saw that the 8 inch display was a 1600x768 resolution. Even if you have some scrolling to do, reading big documents or Web pages is not as difficult as is seems. You also have a "zoom tool" that increases the size of the text without have to change the screen resolution. For such a small notebook you get the right amount of ports and connections. You have 2 USB ports, a dedicated expansion port (for Ethernet and VGA out), 2 Memory Card Readers plus a headphone and microphone jack.



The Sony Vaio Lifestyle notebook is less powerful than it is beautiful. You can imagine that Sony could not put powerful components in such a small space as this would have cause series ventilation problems. This notebook has a 1.33 GHz Intel Atom processor with 2 GB DDR2 RAM. The weak processor helps save up some battery life which is more important than having a powerful processor in such a small notebook. You can still perform your usual Web surfing, document reading and Microsoft Office using but you certainly can't play games or expect too much multimedia performance. The graphics card is an Intel GMA 500 and you have 64GB of disk space. It seems the notebook runs better when using Windows 7. The speakers are not that good but this is no surprise coming from such a small notebook. In fact, we can compare the sound of this notebook with the speaker option of a cell-phone. However, if you want to listen to some music we recommend you buy a good set of headphones or maybe attach some external speakers. Since of components are cramped up in such a small space, this notebook will produce a big amount of heat. It should be okay if you use it for basic tasks like writing an email, surfing the internet or reading and writing a document. If you use the 4-cell battery you should get 2 hours and 39 minutes of battery life but with the 6-cell battery you can use this notebook for 4 hours. If you wish to extend the battery life you can lower the brightness and turn off the wireless feature.



Sony has managed once again to come up with a very special gadget for all technologies fans. Just by the title "Lifestyle PC" you can tell that this notebook is dedicated to the premium segment and it is not a machine that anyone can afford. Its most stiff competition is probably the HP Mini10 Vivienne Tam limited edition notebook which is as expensive as this Sony Vaio. But the HP has such a high price because the exterior has been redesigned by a famous American fashion house and that notebook is more of a fashion statement than any other notebook on the market. Even if the design of these two netbooks toes not exactly compare, the Sony Vaio Lifestyle PC is better rated than any other notebook.

Hey, remember that mystery tablet NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang was pimping a mere couple of weeks ago? Well, it's made its way to London, and woe betide the Engadget editor who didn't get a hands-on with such an exclusive piece of hardware. So what we're looking at here is a Windows CE-powered, resistive touchscreen display spanning somewhere around 15 or 16 inches, with the same Tegra internals as may be found in the Zune HD or one of them smart book devices. As we reported earlier , the company behind the machine is ICD, and this particular unit was built to try and entice T-Mobile into placing a few orders.

Being a prototype, the device on hand was quite literally rough around the edges, but what we saw was appetite-whetting. The overall construction is under an inch thin, 720p video playback was excellent, and there's even a terrific-looking wireless recharge station cum base accessory -- think of Palm's Touchstone, only enlarged and magnetized to the point where it can support the whole tablet in an upright position. If somebody marries all that hardware potential with the Stantum multi touch firmware and a more finger-friendly OS, this thing just might make the whole Apple tablet brouhaha utterly irrelevant. Is Microsoft about to ditch windows mobile?

A recent article by UK's The Guardian suggests that Microsoft could abandon Windows Mobile entirely should its next version, Windows Mobile 7, fail to reverse the decline of its market share in the mobile device space.

Recent numbers give Windows Mobile a 7.9 percent share in Q3 2009, a drop from 11 percent in the same quarter a year ago. And things do not appear to be getting rosier with an increasing number of device manufacturers throwing their support towards other operating systems. Among these, HTC (Windows Mobile's largest partner) and Motorola both have plans to offer more devices powered by Google Android. In fact, Android's share has grown to 3.9 percent in the same period that Microsoft's dropped 3.1 percent. Add Apple and RIM's growing shares and it's clear that Microsoft has some fearsome opposition.

Should Windows Mobile's market share continue to decline, a number of analysts have speculated that Microsoft could simply stop developing Windows Mobile and possibly even withdraw entirely.

Personally, I don't see Microsoft abandoning the market. Instead, I would expect Microsoft to buy out a competitor like Palm or even RIM and take its strategy in a new direction if things do not improve in the next couple of years.

ASUS is now ready to release their newest ION netbook, the ASUS EeePC 1201. Hewlett-Packard, Lenevo, and Samsung have all featured new ION netbooks, so you knew that ASUS would be quick to follow.

The ASUS 1201 has many similarities to its predecessors. It still features the Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics chipset, but now it is bundled with a dual- core N330 Atom processor. The newest ASUS netbook really has been improved in the best possible ways.

I personally really like the look of this netbook. It is very long and slim and is enveloped in a shiny plastic that is available in black or silver. It weighs a mere 3.1 pound, making it the lightest 12-inch screen netbook on the market. The fact that it has a 12-inch screen is impressive, as most netbooks only have 10-inch screens. It also features incredible 1,366 x 768 resolution which is not found in many other netbooks. An element that is new to ASUS netbooks is the full size keyboard, which definitely comes in handy.

The specs on the ASUS 1201 are pretty standard for netbooks. It includes a 250GB hard drive, three USB ports, a media card reader, an Ethernet port, and a webcam. Last September a teaser page rolls out by Dell teasing for their 9.99mm thick new iteration of Adamo. It’s coincide with the Apple event that makes it just a background of the busy story pushing on the web every hour. I check my mail this morning and as a normal subscription I got an email from Dell telling that Adamo XPS is now officially released.

Samsung have unveiled their latest Wi-Fi camera called ST1000. I don’t know if you got the point of mounting such connectivity on a camera, but as the technology moves really fast there will be a time that we will find data, photos are directly streamed and stored. But honestly, I find ST1000 really useful, for online geek and socialites.

My point is when I’m covering a press release and you need to live feed photos to your laptop you don’t need to the hassle trick of old-fashioned USB or SD card reader. Getting my live photos almost seamlessly streamed for my readers.

Dual Screen Notebooks - The Wide New Era For Notebooks.

Though it has been a long road, buzz about dual screen notebooks of various sizes is beginning to increase. Frankly, it's pretty cool and darned expensive. But is this feature useful enough that those of us with wide eyes and thin wallets will one day see drop into the everyday consumer level, or is this just another novelty act?It all started last year with the Lenovo W700ds. That notebook was based off the original W700, a roughly $3000 (to start) clunker that was aimed at designers who wanted a premium display. This model (ds referring to dual screens) would have a secondary 10.6" display which could slide out from behind the standard 17" display. The idea was that people using Photoshop could put their palettes, etc. on the small screen while they worked on the larger one. The extra display added around $600 to the price of the notebook.

Laptopmag recently featured a roundup of some of the recent new entries. First, the futuristic (if it was the 1960s) sounding dual screen notebook, the gScreen Spacebook. The Spacebook is supposed to feature dual 15.4" displays on an 8.7lb frame, which is heavy but hardly excessive when you figure you're getting an extra screen. It's been reported that they wanted to begin selling the laptop by this December for prices around $3000, but it doesn't sound like there's been very much in the way of confirmation. More recently, a dual screen beauty of a netbook from Kohjinsha was spotted at CEATEC (pictured above). It featured a swiveling dual screen display of 10.1" screens which can hit resolutions of either 1024 x 600 or 1366 x 768. The specs seem pretty decent, and the final weight of under 4lbs seems phenomenal. Unfortunately, the makers aren't even at the point where they can speculate on price or availability, so we'll just have to wait. It's probably safe to say it'll be south of $3000, but I would expect it to cost easily more than twice as much as a standard netbook.

Dual screens coming to netbooks (while keeping them still light enough to be actually portable) is exciting because it means the price point is coming down, and the massive netbook market might get a look at it and help this idea take off. It's one thing to take the 17", nearly 12lb, $3600 W700ds and shrink it to a 15.4", nearly 9lb, $3000 Spacebook... but another thing altogether to make the dual screens 10.1" and keep the weight under 4lbs. Another interesting trend is this - the W700ds packed intense features, including Quad-Core Extreme processors and up to 8GB RAM (this would raise the price of course). The Spacebook claims to feature some top notch Intel Core 2 Duo stuff and up to 4GB RAM. Kohjinsha's offering will feature an AMD Athlon MV-40 CPU, which can handle HD, but is still just 1.6GHz.

Seeing dual screens slide down to more and more affordable features gives me hope that this will catch on bigtime. The risk, of course, is that it really is only useful for extremely demanding fields where space and processing is a premium, and that the average user simply won't shell out more just for a second screen. Even if that's the case, the trend is still on the upswing, so I'm looking forward to more sweet prototypes in the months to come.

Motorola's CLIQ, MOTOBLUR, Take Phones to New Dimension.

New phones coming out with new hardware/software is hardly breaking news these days. But Motorola has done something a little different, to great fanfare to boot, and that's release a phone that is supposed to be attractive to consumers based on primarily their online service, MOTOBLUR, which is great for social network gurus. Buying a phone for a service? Sounds a little odd, but it makes sense.

Motorola's CLIQ cell phone (in the US anyway - it's DEXT internationally) is built on relatively normal computing hardware, packs a solid frame, good keyboard, and an Android OS. But what really stands out is MOTOBLUR. With this service, you log into whatever social networks you like - Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc - just once, and your phone does the rest. Your home page will display the latest social updates from the networks of your choosing, followed by the latest messages to you of any kind (Email, tweet, text, etc), followed by a space where you can update your status on your own networks. You can share photos just as easily as updates. Your contacts can be synced with your social networks too, attaching profile pictures and status updates. You can see these updates as you scroll through your contacts, and they will also display on the incoming call screen. You also get a standard web browser, GPS, Android market goodies, and all other standard smartphone features. MOTOBLUR even offers "Safe & Secure", a free service (hear that, Apple?) that continuously backs up your information and makes it accessible so that you can wipe data from your phone if you lose it, and then load up all your info onto your new phone without any hassle.

In short, you might say the CLIQ is a phone designed with a purpose, and that's social networking. However, it may be more accurate to say the phone's purpose is really just to use MOTOBLUR, and that is the feature that is designed for the social networking (actually it can handle updates being pushed to it from a number of sources, if you choose). Saul Hansel of the NYT Bits blog put it well when he pointed out that this is represents a shift in focus for handset companies, adding "once you decide that telephones aren’t really just telephones, then you’ve got to accept the that phone makers are not really phone makers."

And so, we consider buying Motorola phones, not because of anything they are, but because of what they can connect to. Motorola plans on releasing other targeted phones over the next 12-18 months too. It remains to be seen if this niche phone angle can really chip away at the do-it-allers like iPhones in the handset market.

Asus has rolled out a new line of thin and light laptops powered by Intel CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Volatage) processors. The series includes the 13 inch UL30A and 12 inch UL20A.

Intel unleashes fastest laptop chips to date.

Intel on Wednesday released its fastest laptop processor to date, also setting the stage to release its next generation of chips for mainstream laptops.

The new Core i7 processors are Intel's first laptop chips based on the Nehalem microarchitecture and include many enhancements that allow the processors to outperform existing Core 2 laptop processors. The quad-core processors are targeted at high-performance gaming laptops and business workstations.

The Nehalem microarchitecture is considered a significant upgrade over Intel's earlier microarchitectures, as it cuts bottlenecks to improve overall system speed and performance per watt. The new chips are also able to shut down dormant cores and move the extra processing power to active cores. The technology, called Turbo Boost, can boost chip speeds up to 3.33GHz depending on the power drawn by the laptops.

Intel introduced three Core i7 processors on Wednesday. The Core i7 920XM will run at 2.0GHz, with up to 8MB of cache. The Core i7-820QM will run at 1.73GHZ, with 8MB of cache. The Core i7-720QM will run at 1.6GHz and include 6MB of cache. The chips will be made using the 45-nanometer manufacturing process. The i7-920XM, i7-820QM, and i7-720QM processors are priced at $1,054, $546, and $364, respectively, in units of 1,000.

The chips' launch also sets the stage for Intel to introduce its next generation of laptop chips based on Nehalem. The company will deliver faster and more power-efficient chips based on Nehalem to budget laptops.

"We are going to bring [Nehalem] technology to the masses early next year," said David Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's architecture group, during a speech on Wednesday at the Intel Developer Forum trade show in San Francisco.

Intel hopes to create more integrated chips that pack even more features as it moves to the latest chip manufacturing process by the end of this year. The company will start making laptop processors using the latest 32-nm process in the fourth quarter. Intel has seen a 30-fold reduction in power consumption in 32-nm process chips compared to the 45-nm process.

The first 32-nm chips for budget laptops, code-named Arrandale, will be a significant upgrade to existing Core 2 Duo chips. Arrandale is a two-chip package with an integrated graphics processor, which could help improve graphics performance while drawing less power. The initial chips will come in dual-core configurations with 4MB of cache. The chips allow each core to run two threads simultaneously so that more tasks can be run at the same time.

The new chips will be part of the Westmere microarchitecture, which is a shrink of Intel's existing Nehalem microarchitecture. Nehalem provides a faster pipe for the CPU to communicate with system components such as a graphics card. Nehalem chips integrate a memory controller onto the chip to provide a faster access path to memory.

PC makers including Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba, and Asustek Computer started shipping laptops with the latest Nehalem chips on Wednesday.

Dell has already started putting the new Core i7 chips in multimedia laptops. The new Studio 17 will come with the Core i7-720QM and include the 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium OS, which is eligible for a Windows 7 upgrade. It also offers ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics, supports up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, and includes two 1.5-watt speakers and a 6-watt subwoofer in the case. It includes a 17.3-inch display, comes with a 2-megapixel webcam, and supports up to 250GB of storage. It comes with a 9-cell battery, though Dell didn't immediately comment on battery life. Prices start at $1,099.

Dell's laptops with 15.6-inch screens -- the Studio 15 and Studio XPS 16 laptops -- will also include new processors. Studio 15 prices start at $999, while the Studio XPS 16 starts at $1,249. Dell's Alienware gaming unit also launched the new Alienware M15x laptop with the Core i7-920XM laptop, which has a 15-inch screen and Nvidia's GeForce graphics card.

Toshiba on Wednesday launched the Qosmio X505-Q850 laptop, which has a hulking 18.4-inch display and includes Intel's Core i7-720QM processor. It supports up to 6GB of memory and 320GB of storage. It will include Nvidia's GeForce GTX graphics card. Pricing for the product hasn't been set, and it will be available next month.

A company named CEVA Logistics was housing somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 iPhones in a warehouse when intruders climbed up a fire ladder and sliced a hole through the roof.

Samsung Behold II Review

Samsung's Behold II is the most impressively ugly Android phone in existence. The custom interface is so bad, so gaudy and so confusing it turned my brains into ooze.

TouchWiz is the first custom Android interface that's worse than the standard one, and shows what kind of horrible things emerge when Samsung's interface designers are left unchecked. Here's how I think the design process went, roughly: The designers dropped a bunch of acid, stared at old Atari games while binging on Taco Bell, then proceeded to shit all over the phone for hours and hours.

If it's not inherently ugly, like text input screens with awful '80s neon orange and blue, it's gratuitous and redundant, like the 3D app cube. Or an entirely separate menu of Samsung icons for apps. And some things, like moving the slide-out menu to the left instead of its traditional place on the bottom, actually work against the way you use the phone—the menu gets in the way now, since I'd often bring it out by accident while changing between desktops. It's just... terrible. Worse, Home Switcher, an app that reverts phones back to the stock Android home screen, can't erase Samsung's disgusting mojo. The Behold II would be 10x better with a vanilla build of Android 1.6.

Even the phone hardware is a mess. The front of the phone is an orgy of buttons: seven, to be precise, not including a d-pad, with a dedicated button for the app cube. The lock key isn't just on the side but it's kind of hidden, flush against the bezel. The USB port is weirdly shoved on top. And, uh, what the hell is up with the back plate?

Two things are good about the Behold II—Samsung's custom camera setup comes straight out of their point-and-shoot cameras, and is packed with features, like extensive manual controls and burst shooting, and it's very fast, unlike the rest of the phone. The other is the AMOLED display which is nice, though marred by the same kind of bluish tint as Samsung's other AMOLED Android phone, the Moment.

Take a good long look at the Behold II though: It's a warning to other developers what not to do, and a scary look at one dark possible future for Android, in its infinite permutations. Not just deep fragmentation of the platform, but customized crimes against humanity, perpetrated in the name of Android. It makes me want to cry, except that my brain's too mushy my eyes work.

First Android Tegra-powered 7- 11-and 15-inch tablets Arrives 2010

I'm psyched to see Android moving into tablets. Some of the first will be from Innovative Converged Devices (ICD), who say their Tegra-powered 7-, 11-, and 15-inch tablets will arrive through "tier one" carriers in the first half of 2010.

I hadn't heard of ICD before, either: they're actually based in the UK and Seattle. They say the Vega tablets are intended to be low cost, so it looks like some carrier subsidies may be in store, too.

The largest model has a 15.6-inch resistive screen (grr) that supports a resolution of 1366 x 768. It'll have a Tegra processor, 512MB DDR DRAM, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi (no N), and Bluetooth 2.1. The built-in 512MB NAND Flash storage can be expanded via MicroSD cards. It's expected this mode will weigh about 45 ounces and have a battery life of around 4 hours.

The 15-inch Vega also looks pretty similar to the stylish reference Tegra tablet that we spotted Nvidia's chief with earlier in the week. The good news is we'll be able to get a closer look at it come CES time in January

Dell has taken its sweet time in bringing the 7.75- x 7.75- x 3.5-inch Inspiron Zino HD to market, but just 24 hours after it made its market debut across the pond, this little zinger is finally available to the Yanks in attendance. Starting at just $229, the mini PC is far more exhilarating than most ho hum nettops. Oh sure, the base configuration is fairly unexciting, but thankfully Dell enables you to add up to 8GB of memory, a 1.8GHz dual-core AMD Athlon Neo X2 6850e CPU, up to 1TB of HDD space, an optional Blu-ray drive, a 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4330 discrete GPU and WiFi to the mix. 'Course, speccing it out will obviously raise the price substantially, but it's always nice to see more power than anticipated within such a minuscule box. Of note, Dell also mentions that an optional TV tuner, wireless keyboard and mouse are available, but at least for now, the TV tuner is nowhere to be found in the configuration pages. Other inclusions are a 4-in-1 card reader, four USB 2.0 sockets and a pair of eSATA ports. Who says HTPCs have to breathe fire?

After the IFA show in Berlin a few weeks ago, it's clear that 3D is getting a big push by some powerful players in consumer electronics. Unfortunately, you won't find many editors around here chompin' at the bit to replace their new Full HD flat screens for a 3D-capable one... and we've seen the demos! Now a Commercial Times report has HP and Dell signed on with Wistron to produce 3D laptops -- Lenovo and Sony are still negotiating. Of course, we've already seen desktop systems powered by NVIDIA's GeForce 3D Vision solution. And rumors have swirled in the past regarding a possible HP laptop using 18.4-inch 3D panels developed by Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) and a Wistron-developed 3D laptop solution based around NVIDIA's Vision technology. Thing is, if 3D isn't that compelling on screens 40-inches and above, how's it going to woo consumers at this size?

Samsung Electronics has introduced its first internal multi-format Blu-ray drive in the electronic market: SH-B083. This Blu-ray disc drive is compatible with high-capacity discs of up to 25GB if they are single-layer discs, or up to 50GB if they are double-layer discs. And, of course, the drive can be used with personal computers (PCs).

This drive reads BD-R and BD-ROM discs at up to 8x speeds. Besides, the CDs are read at up to 48x speeds and the DVDs at up to 16x. Also, the new SH-B083 multi-format drive features an average access speed of 350 ms. On the other hand, besides reading Blu-ray discs, it reads and writes CD and DVD.

The SH-B083 comes with two lenses for more stable reading and writing. This way, a lens is reserved to read BD discs, while the other one reads and writes CDs and DVDs. In addition, the Spherical Aberration Compensation Technology (SACT) improves the reading of those BD discs where the protective layer doesn’t have an uniform thickness.

Also, the precision step control technology (PSCT) allows users to enjoy a higher resolution in the optical pickup head unit (OPU), which is an absolutely necessary requirement due to the smaller track pitch of BD discs (when they are compared with CDs and DVDs).

Although an official announcement has not been made, apparently MSI will launch a new netbook with Windows 7 soon. At least, that can be deduced by visiting a product page on its website where the new item is labeled as “Wind12 U230″.

This ultrathin notebook comes with the new AMD Athlon Neo X2 Dual-Core Processor at 1.6GHz, which is accompanied by an integrated graphics chipset (ATI’s Radeon HD 3200). Other features are similar to the ones found in the current Wind12 U210 notebook, including a
12.1-inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768.

Also, it comes with 1GB of RAM that can be optionally increased up to 4 GB, and hard drives ranging from 160GB to 320GB. The standard version features a 1.3-megapixel webcam, Gigabit Ethernet, and a Wi-Fi module. In addition, it has a HDMI port, VGA connector, and three USB ports.

Bluetooth connectivity is optional, as well as a 6-cell battery that is supposed to provide up to 4 hours of battery life.

Dell just announced that its Dell Adamo XPS, a laptop that is only 9.99mm (4/10") thin, will ship this month. The laptop that used to be shown behind closed doors as a "prototype" will now make its debut as a product for this holiday season. You've seen the leaks, the photos, the teasers, and now you're finally getting the real price: Adamo XPS starts at $1799.

Dell has gone through a lot of trouble to design an ultralight that is thinner than the Macbook Air, its direct competitor and the incumbent in this category. The Adamo XPS is indeed thinner, but it has a similar weight (3lbs or so) to the Air. On the other hand, the Air has a faster CPU and graphics processor, plus a longer battery life (Apple claims 5hrs, while Dell claims 2h30 with the standard battery). The Adamo XPS can receive a bigger battery, but I haven't seen what it looks like and I can't imagine that it would be a good thing for the slim line of this laptop. The Adamo XPS has 4GB of memory, versus only 2GB for the Air, and memory can make a big difference, depending on what you do.

A smattering of from reports around the web have it that Hewlett-Packard is looking to debut a few new machines here in the near future, starting with the AMD-powered 13.3-inch Pavilion dv3z ($799.99), the 16-inch dv6t entertainment notebook ($679.99) and the 17-inch Pavilion G70 ($799.99). We're also clued in on a Compaq Presario CQ60, which will tout a 15.4-inch panel, AMD CPU and not much else considering the $469.99 price tag. 10 Useful Tips For Prolonging Battery Life.

Nowadays, everything comes with a rechargeable battery, but who knew that getting long battery life could get soooo confusing? Here are 10 expert-backed tips to keep you from running low on the juice:

1. Since a battery should never be 100% full or 100% empty, you should charge it then discharge it in sequence ideally ranging between 80% to 20%. Start by charging for 12 minutes, then running it down, then charge it for 11 minutes then run it down, and so on. Confused? Just use this handy formula: n!=C(n,k)/r! where n can't equal r, and k never reaches zero. Simple!

2. If you use a phone or laptop without first charging its battery fully, you will die.

3. A lot of battery experts warn of the memory effect, but it's not really an "effect." It's just their way of saying "Remember to charge your batteries!"

4. Batteries run better when cold. The easiest way to do this is to find a refrigerated warehouse or meat locker, befriend the night watchman, and do all your work from there. ($20 bribes usually work.)

5. If your laptop battery gets hot enough to sear tuna, step away. Check your fridge for tuna. If no tuna in fridge, run to the supermarket to buy tuna. Don't worry, as long as you don't unplug your laptop, the battery will stay hot while you are gone.

6. When putting your laptop into storage, take out the battery. Wrap the extracted battery in a well oiled cloth and place it in a clay pot. Bury the pot in a hayfield. Any will do, but it's best if there's a long rock wall with a big oak tree at the north end. The battery should keep fresh for up to six months that way. If you're worried about finding it again, just mark your spot with a rock that has no earthly business in a hayfield. I favor black volcanic glass.

7. If your battery is about to run dry, take it out and blow on it. I have no idea why this works, but it totally does.

8. If your battery does die, you can always make your own: A potato theoretically has enough "potential energy" stored inside to power a laptop for a full hour—the trick is knowing where to stick the wires. Just ask a third grader. One tip: The potato must not be baked.

9. You should never confuse your batteries. Here's an easy way to keep them apart in your head: Lithium Ion batteries explode, Nickel Cadmium destroys the environment, and Lead Acid batteries are more corrosive than the Alien Queen's blood (plus, they contain lead). You can eat Lithium Ferro Phosphate batteries.

10. People may tell you to carry a battery-life extender in your bag, but the secret there is, it's just another battery. What do I recommend? Jumper cables.

After Verizon aired advertisements bashing the iPhone, many tech observers agreed it was unimaginable that Apple could be considering sharing the popular smartphone with Verizon. But a new report suggests the contrary.

Apple is indeed delivering a Verizon iPhone in the third quarter of 2010, claims research firm OTR Global. The firm cites sources who say Apple is working on a “worldmode” iPhone compatible with Verizon’s CDMA network. (Apple’s current iPhones only work on the GSM standard, which AT&T’s network is part of.)

The firm’s report, which was provided to AppleInsider, also claims the handset will have a smaller screen — 2.8 inches, significantly smaller than the current iPhone’s 3.5-inch display.

Whispers of a different iPhone being developed for Verizon were exchanged back in April. BusinessWeek cited two sources “familiar with the matter” saying Apple and Verizon were working to offer two new iPhone-like devices: a smaller, less-expensive calling device (perhaps an “iPhone lite”), and a more expensive, unnamed media pad, which can place calls over Wi-Fi, display photos, and play music as well as high-definition video.

Apple’s exclusive contract with AT&T will reportedly end in 2010, and many observers speculated that the Cupertino, California company would then share the iPhone with Verizon. However, the consensus quickly reversed when Verizon aired its Droid TV ads ruthlessly attacking the shortcomings of the iPhone.
